3 fields of activities

1- Within the area of compulsory insurance, UNMS operates in two sectors :

  • healthcare (reimbursement for medical and hospital services) : 5.2 billion euros
  • sickness benefits (provision of alternative source of income for both employees and self-employed workers unfit to work) : 1.3 billion euros

2- Within the area of complementary insurance, specific services of social, cultural and medical nature have been organised for target groups including the elderly, chronically ill, women, young people and the disabled. The Socialist Mutual benefit society also has a large network of specific services in areas such as home-delivered help and care, family planning, cooperative pharmacies, etc…).

The Socialist Mutual benefit society organises the payment of additional financial costs involved in certain services in fields such as : Hospitalisation, medical assistance abroad, spectacles or contraception.

The Socialist Mutual benefit society has a mission to provide information and assistance on offered complementary services. In this respect, the mutual benefit society is under an obligation to inform its affiliates about health and social rights and has the legal power to defend its members.

3- Mutual societies work in conjunction with a number of youth associations, a womens movement, disability representatives and an association for older people . These associations are partly publicly funded. Programs such as prevention and the promotion of health, citizenship and involvement into the public space have been developed together with and for their target groups.
